“I am the Light of the World”

John 8:12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

1. I am the light of the world.

Gen 1:1-5 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And v3-4 “God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”

II Cor. 6:14 “…what fellowship can light have with darkness? ”

I John 1:5 “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”

John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.      3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. v4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

overcome = sieze a tight hold of, extinquish, comprehend, understand

John 1:9-13 “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

recognize = come to know, experiential knowledge

receive = actively lay hold of

2. “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 12:35-36 “Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”

John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

Ps. 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

John 1:14 “The Word became flesh & made his dwelling among us.”

John 3:19-21 “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

Acts 26:18to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins…”

Eph. 1:18 “I also pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened.”

NLT “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light.. ”

II Cor. 4:6-7 “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”

I John 1:5-7 “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Eph. 4:26-27 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”

I John 2:9-11 “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”

I Thess. 5:4-6 “…you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.”

Colo. 1:11-14 “May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,                                             but will have the light of life.”
